Dr Leonard Shan, FRACS, PhD is a vascular and endovascular (minimally invasive) surgeon specialising in the treatment of arterial and venous conditions. Dr Shan provides comprehensive care for patients throughout Victoria, from central and greater Melbourne to the Macedon Ranges and Gippsland regions.

Biography

Dr Leonard Shan, MBBS (Hons), BMedSci, FRACS, PhD Melb is a distinguished vascular surgeon at St. Vincent's and Epworth Hospitals, Honorary Senior Fellow in the Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne, and Head of Research in the Department of Vascular Surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr Shan is also the founder of the ShanVascular Veins Centre which specialises in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins. 

 

Dr Shan is internationally recognised for his expertise on optimising quality of life after surgery. He was awarded a Commonwealth Government sponsored PhD in vascular surgery from The University of Melbourne under the mentorship of world-renowned surgeons Professor Alun Davies and Professor Peter Choong. His doctoral thesis significantly advanced the field of patient-reported outcomes which are critical for personalising treatments to achieve outcomes that patients value. Dr Shan's academic work over the last 15 years includes 35 publications (h-index 17, >1300 citations) which have featured in some of the highest-ranked journals in medicine and surgery such as Circulation and Annals of Surgery. ​

​Dr Shan manages a wide variety of arterial and venous conditions in a multidisciplinary environment. He is known for engaging his patients in shared decision-making in a way that is simple and easy to understand. Dr Shan takes pride in supporting his patients throughout their entire treatment journey. Patients are cared for at academic centres of excellence, supported by a highly qualified team of physicians, anaesthetists, intensivists, and allied health professionals. Dr Shan provides 7 convenient consulting locations throughout Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges, and Gippsland. On-site or nearby vascular laboratory ultrasounds performed by specialist vascular sonographers are organised for all patients.
