Dr Leonard Shan, FRACS, PhD is a distinguished vascular surgeon at St. Vincent's and Epworth Hospitals, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne, Head of Research in the Department of Vascular Surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, and editorial board member of the Annals of Vascular Surgery. He is also a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and member of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery.
Dr Shan is internationally recognised for his expertise in quality of life after surgery which has been his area of interest for over a decade. He obtained a Commonwealth-Government-funded PhD in vascular surgery from The University of Melbourne with the mentorship of world-renowned surgeons Professor Alun Davies and Professor Peter Choong. His thesis has significantly advanced our understanding of patient-centric outcomes, thus allowing more tailored treatments approaches. To date, Dr Shan has published 35 peer-reviewed journal articles (h-index 16, >1100 citations) in some of the highest-ranking journals in medicine and surgery, including Circulation and Annals of Surgery.
As an academic vascular surgeon, Dr Shan maintains a commitment to ethical, evidence-based, and patient-centred clinical practice. He provides high-quality multidisciplinary care for a diverse range of arterial and venous conditions. At St. Vincent's Hospital, Dr Shan is one of two surgeons managing specialised services for varicose veins, high-risk foot care, and dialysis access. Dr Shan is known for engaging his patients in shared decision-making to identify optimal treatment solutions, ensuring effective management of his patients' conditions, regardless of the need for surgical intervention.
Dr Shan is able to see patients within 1-2 weeks and is committed to minimising waiting times for surgical procedures. Patients are cared for at academic centres of excellence, supported by a highly qualified team of physicians, anaesthetists, intensivists, and allied health staff. Dr Shan provides six convenient consulting locations throughout Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges, and Gippsland. Vascular laboratory ultrasounds performed by specialist trained vascular sonographers are organised for all patients.
